Cosmetic surgery in Tunisia: what explains the prices, and what to check

An abdominoplasty costs €2,200 in Tunisia. In France it costs several times that. The gap is large enough that the first reaction is usually suspicion, and that reaction is reasonable.

So here is what actually explains the difference, what it does not change, what it genuinely does change, and the seven things worth checking before you commit to anything.

The key points

  • The price gap comes from the cost of living and the cost of running a business, not from the quality of the surgery itself.
  • Training, equipment and sterile technique are comparable.
  • What really changes is distance: follow-up happens remotely, and a revision means travelling again.
  • Seven checks are set out below, and they apply to any provider, including us.
  • Health insurers generally do not reimburse cosmetic surgery performed abroad.

1. Why prices are lower

Four factors account for most of the difference:

  • Cost of living and salaries. Every member of the team, from the surgeon to the nursing staff, is paid on a different scale.
  • Premises and running costs. Property, energy and maintenance all cost less.
  • Social charges and professional insurance. These are a substantial part of the price of an operation in Western Europe.
  • Volume of activity. A facility that operates regularly spreads its fixed costs over more procedures.

What does not cost less is anything implanted. Breast implants, dental implants, surgical staples and injectable products come from the same manufacturers at the same prices as in Europe.

That is why the gap is proportionally smaller for procedures involving a device. A breast augmentation at €2,500 includes implants bought at European prices; a sleeve gastrectomy at €3,950 includes the staplers; a liposuction at €1,700 involves no implanted device at all, and the gap is widest there.

2. What the price gap does not change

Training. Dr Taher Djemal trained in Tunis, Paris and Nancy, with further experience at Foch Hospital in Paris and in Baltimore, and has been practising in Tunis since 1992.

Equipment. The implants carry CE marking and are traceable. You are given the traceability documents for whatever is placed in your body, and you should keep them.

Sterile technique and anaesthesia. The principles are the same, because they are not negotiable anywhere.

Operating time. An abdominoplasty takes the same time in Tunis as it does in Lyon. A lower price is not a faster operation.

3. What it does change

This is the part worth reading twice, because it is where the real trade-off sits.

Distance if there is a complication. If something happens after you are home, you will be seen by a doctor who did not perform the operation. That is workable, but it means you need your documents with you.

Follow-up happens remotely. Photographs, messaging and video calls. This works in the large majority of cases, but it is not the same as walking into a clinic.

A revision means travelling again. Revision surgery is uncommon, but if it is needed it involves another journey, another stay and another recovery.

No reimbursement. Cosmetic surgery abroad is generally not covered by health insurance. If your procedure might be covered at home for medical reasons, check with your insurer before you decide anything.

A flight home of several hours after surgery. This requires specific precautions, which the surgeon will set out, and it is one of the reasons the return date is not chosen freely.

4. Seven things to check before you choose

1. Who the surgeon is. Their name, their speciality and a career you can verify. Ours are on the surgeons page.

2. Where the operation takes place. A full operating theatre and the capacity to keep you overnight. For us, that is Myron International Clinic in Tunis.

3. A written breakdown of the price, including what is not covered. Ours is on the prices page.

4. An in-person consultation with both the surgeon and the anaesthetist before the procedure. This is not negotiable.

5. Post-operative monitoring. Some procedures require a hospital stay — three days for a BBL, for instance.

6. Follow-up after you return. A contact you can reach, defined check-in points, and your operative report handed to you in person.

7. What happens if there is a contraindication. The answer should be that the operation does not take place.

If you want to go through this in more depth, we have a longer piece on the twelve things that distinguish a serious clinic.

5. Three signals that should give you pause

A price well below the market. If an offer is half the price of everything else for the same thing, something has been removed. Usually the hospital stay, the quality of the equipment, or the presence of an anaesthetist.

A promised result. No surgeon can guarantee a precise outcome. Anyone who does is selling rather than assessing.

A facility that accepts everything. If your request is approved without an examination and without a single qualification, no one has actually looked at your case.

6. When the journey is actually worth it

It depends on the amount. For a €300 treatment such as injectables, travelling makes no sense. For a procedure costing several thousand euros, the difference is significant enough to matter.

Combining procedures. Several operations can often be done in one stay, meaning one anaesthetic and one recovery instead of two. Whether that is possible depends on the total anaesthetic time the surgeon considers acceptable.

Timing. There are no waiting lists of several months.

An organised pathway. Airport pick-up, transfers, and a single point of contact throughout the stay.

Distance itself. For procedures people would rather keep private, being away from home is part of the point.

8. Our role, and its limits

ServiHealth is a support and coordination agency. We organise the stay, put the file together, arrange the appointments and handle the follow-up.

We do not perform the operations. Those are carried out by partner surgeons, and every medical decision belongs to them — including the decision not to operate.

If there is a contraindication, nothing is charged for reviewing your file.

Frequently asked questions

Why is it cheaper in Tunisia?

The difference comes mainly from the cost of living, the cost of running a facility and professional insurance, all of which are lower. Implanted devices, by contrast, cost the same as they do in Europe.

Are Tunisian surgeons qualified?

Many trained and practised in Europe. The question that matters is not the country but the individual practitioner: ask for their name, their speciality and their career before you commit. Our partner surgeons' profiles are on the surgeons page.

What happens if I have a complication after I get home?

Contact us straight away, and see a doctor near you immediately if it is urgent. This is exactly why your operative report is handed to you and why a contact remains reachable after you return.

Will my health insurance cover it?

Generally not, for cosmetic surgery performed abroad. For procedures that might be covered at home on medical grounds, check with your insurer before making any decision.

How long do I need to stay in Tunisia?

From one day for an aesthetic medicine treatment to five or six days for an abdominoplasty. A dental implant usually requires two separate stays.

Can several procedures be combined?

Often, yes, which reduces both the total cost and the number of trips. Whether it is feasible depends on the anaesthetic time the surgeon considers acceptable, which is decided at the consultation.
