Liposuction: which areas can be treated, and what result to expect
Liposuction removes localised fat that does not respond to diet or exercise. It does not make you lose weight, and it does not tighten skin.
Those two sentences decide most of whether you will be pleased with the result. What follows is what liposuction achieves area by area, where it reaches its limit, and which operation is the right one when it does.
The key points
- Liposuction acts on fat. Not on skin, and not on the scales.
- Different areas respond differently, and some respond poorly.
- The quality of your skin matters as much as the amount of fat.
- How many areas can be treated in one session is limited by anaesthetic time, not by willingness.
- Prices run from €1,700 to €2,500 depending on how many areas are treated.
What liposuction does, and does not do
It permanently removes fat cells from the treated area, and those cells do not grow back. If you gain weight afterwards, the remaining cells elsewhere enlarge instead, which is why the result holds best at a stable weight.
It does not make you lose weight. It changes a contour, not a number.
It does not treat cellulite. The appearance can be slightly improved. It is not removed.
It does not tighten skin. On skin that has been stretched by pregnancy or significant weight loss, removing the fat underneath can leave a disappointing result, because the skin no longer retracts to fill the space. Your surgeon assesses this at the consultation, and it is the single most common reason a different operation is recommended.
The abdomen
The most frequently requested area, and the one where the distinction above matters most.
Liposuction is appropriate when the fat sits under skin that is still firm. It refines the waist and redefines the contour.
It is not enough where there is an apron of loose skin or marked stretch marks — that calls for an abdominoplasty, sometimes combined with liposuction in the same operation. Removing the fat without addressing the skin makes the sagging more obvious, not less.
Two other limits worth knowing: liposuction does not reach visceral fat, the deep fat around the organs, which only weight loss addresses. And diastasis — the separation of the abdominal muscles after pregnancy — is corrected by an abdominoplasty. No liposuction brings those muscles back together.
Thighs and saddlebags
The outer thigh responds well, and the correction shows on your silhouette in clothes rather than only undressed.
The inner thigh has thinner skin, so removal there is more measured — taking too much leaves irregularities that are difficult to correct.
Where the skin is slack after weight loss, a thigh lift is the operation that applies. And cellulite may look slightly better afterwards; it does not disappear.
The arms
Liposuction slims the inner arm when there is excess fat and the skin is still firm.
On skin that has already stretched, it makes the slackness worse rather than better. An arm lift is then indicated, with a scar along the inner arm — a real trade-off, and one to understand before choosing.
The test is a pinch at the consultation: what the surgeon can hold between two fingers tells them whether they are dealing with fat or with skin.
Double chin and neck
A modest removal here changes the profile more than the volume would suggest, provided the fat is localised and the neck skin is firm.
Where there is skin laxity or visible vertical bands, a face and neck lift is the appropriate operation.
And one case that catches people out: a recessed chin can create the appearance of a double chin without there being much fat at all. The answer there is a genioplasty, not liposuction, which is why the area is assessed rather than assumed.
Hips and flanks
Love handles respond well, and removing them visibly marks the waist. This is one of the most frequently treated areas, and it forms part of a 360° liposuction alongside the abdomen, waist and back.
In men, the flanks are the most requested area of all.
The back
The rolls across the back, particularly under the bra line, show through fitted clothing and are resistant to exercise.
The fat here is more fibrous, which is why Vaser, which emulsifies fat with ultrasound before removal, offers a real advantage in this area. Expect more bruising than elsewhere, and expect it to last longer.
Knees and calves
Small-volume areas where the correction is modest but visible, particularly on the inner knee.
Calves require caution. The fat layer is thin, vascular structures are close, and taking too much leaves irregularities that are permanent. This is an indication discussed case by case, and sometimes declined.
Buttocks: removing or adding?
Removing volume from the buttocks is delicate: it easily flattens the shape and produces sagging rather than definition.
Adding volume is a different operation — a BBL, where fat harvested elsewhere, often during a liposuction of the abdomen and flanks, is reinjected. It is one of the most frequent combinations, and it has safety requirements of its own that we cover in our article on BBL risks and safe practice.
The same principle applies to breast and facial fat transfer: the liposuction supplies the material.
How many areas in one session?
The limit is the acceptable anaesthetic time and the total volume removed. Beyond that, the risk rises without the result improving, and your surgeon may propose staging the work across two trips rather than doing everything at once.
| Package | Price |
|---|---|
| Liposuction, 1 area | €1,700 |
| Liposuction, 2 to 3 areas | €2,250 |
| 360° liposuction | €2,350 |
| Full-body liposuction | €2,500 |
What each package includes, and what it does not, is set out on the prices page. Check the accommodation line in particular before you budget.
Recovery, by area
- Compression garment: several weeks. It is the single thing you control that most affects the quality of the result.
- Bruising: one to three weeks, more marked on the back and thighs.
- Swelling: masks the result for several weeks.
- Final result: between three and six months.
- Back to exercise: after a few weeks, depending on how much was treated.
- Lymphatic drainage: recommended in some cases. See our guide to what drainage actually does.
Our article on pain after abdominal liposuction covers the first weeks in more detail.
Are you a candidate?
Liposuction is likely to suit you if: you have localised fat that resists diet and exercise, your weight has been stable for several months, your skin has good elasticity, and what you want is a change of contour rather than a change of weight.
Another route is likely to be recommended if: you are significantly overweight, your skin is very slack, your weight is still moving, you have not stopped smoking, you have a clotting disorder, or there is a contraindication to the anaesthetic.
Being told that a different operation suits you better is not a refusal. It is the assessment you came for.
Liposuction is performed for ServiHealth patients by Dr Taher Djemal, Dr Abir Ben Ouaghrem and Dr Walid Saidane, at Myron International Clinic in Tunis.
Frequently asked questions
Can the fat come back after liposuction?
The cells removed do not grow back. If you gain weight, the fat cells that remain elsewhere enlarge, which can change your shape again. The result holds best at a stable weight.
Does liposuction treat cellulite?
No. The appearance can be slightly improved, but cellulite is a skin structure issue rather than a fat volume one, and liposuction does not remove it.
How many areas can be treated at once?
It depends on the acceptable anaesthetic time and the total volume removed, and the surgeon decides at the consultation. More in one session is not better.
When is the result visible?
The first changes appear after a few weeks, once the swelling starts to settle. The final result is between three and six months.
Liposuction or abdominoplasty for the stomach?
Liposuction removes fat. An abdominoplasty removes excess skin and tightens the muscles. If your concern is loose skin or separated muscles after pregnancy, liposuction is not the operation.
Do I have to pay before the procedure?
The quote is free. How and when payment is made is stated in your quote, and never before you have had a consultation.
Which liposuction fits your shape?
ServiHealth organises and coordinates medical stays in Tunisia. Send us photographs and a description of what you have in mind, and you will have a first opinion within 24 to 48 hours. The surgeon decides which operation is appropriate, including when that is not a liposuction.
You can request a quote, free and without obligation.
