Cosmetic surgery in Tunisia from the Gulf: flights, quotes, your stay and follow-up

If you live in the Gulf and are considering cosmetic surgery, Tunisia is likely to have come up. The prices are lower than almost anywhere you would consider, the surgeons are European-trained, and the flight is direct.

What is harder to find is a clear account of how it actually works from here: what to check before you book, what the stay involves day by day, and what happens once you are back in Dubai, Doha or Riyadh with a healing scar and a question at eleven at night.

This guide covers that. It is written for patients travelling from the Gulf, whatever passport you hold.

Why patients travel from the Gulf to Tunisia

One flight, no connection. Emirates flies daily from Dubai to Tunis in around six and a half to seven hours. Qatar Airways flies daily from Doha in around six. From other Gulf cities, check whether a direct service exists before you plan around one.

Almost no time difference to manage. Tunisia is three hours behind the UAE and two behind Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait. Follow-up calls after you return fall inside the working day at both ends, which is not true of most medical-travel destinations.

The surgeons trained in Europe. Dr Taher Djemal trained in Tunis, Paris and Nancy, with further experience at Foch Hospital in Paris and in Baltimore, and has practised in Tunis since 1992. Dr Sofiene Ayadi trained in bariatric surgery at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and at IRCAD in Strasbourg. All of our partner surgeons are registered with the Conseil National de l'Ordre des Médecins de Tunisie. Their full backgrounds are on the surgeons' pages.

Arabic and English are both spoken. You can deal with us in either, and this site exists in Arabic as well.

Prices. They are lower, and there are structural reasons for that which have nothing to do with the quality of the surgery. We have set them out honestly in a separate piece on what explains the prices and what to check, including where a low price should worry you.

Before you book: the one thing most Gulf patients get wrong

Your entry requirements depend on your passport, not on where you live.

This catches people out constantly. A resident of Dubai holding an Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian or British passport does not have the same entry conditions as an Emirati national, and your UAE or Saudi residence permit does not change what Tunisia asks of your nationality.

Check with the Tunisian embassy or consulate for your country of citizenship before you book anything. Rules change, they are specific to your passport, and this is not something to discover at the airport with surgery scheduled for the next morning.

Tell us your nationality when you request a quote and we will tell you what we know, but the embassy is the authority, not us.

How to get a quote and arrange your stay from the Gulf

1. The free online quote request

You complete a confidential medical questionnaire and send photographs of the areas concerned. This allows the surgeon to form a first view of whether what you have in mind is feasible.

It is a preliminary opinion, not a diagnosis. Nothing is confirmed until you have been examined in person.

2. Your detailed quote

The quote is issued in euros and reaches you within 24 to 48 hours. It sets out the total cost with no hidden charges, the type of anaesthetic planned, how many nights you will spend in hospital and how long you should allow at the hotel afterwards.

Read what is not included as carefully as what is. Flights are at your own expense.

3. Planning the trip

Flights arrive at Tunis-Carthage, and some routes serve Enfidha. Once your dates are fixed, our team on the ground handles everything from the moment you land.

Two things worth building into your planning: the working week differs across the Gulf, so check how your leave falls, and if you are travelling during the hottest months, read our note on recovering in hot weather before you choose your dates.

What happens during your stay

Arrival. You are met at the airport and driven to the clinic or your hotel. You are not finding your own way anywhere.

Pre-operative consultation, the day before. You meet the surgeon and the anaesthetist in person and have your blood work done. This is the appointment at which the procedure is confirmed, modified, or — if there is a contraindication — does not go ahead.

Surgery and hospital stay. One to three nights under observation at Myron International Clinic, depending entirely on the procedure. Some operations need longer: a BBL involves three days in hospital, for reasons we explain in our piece on BBL safety.

Convalescence at the hotel. Nursing care comes to your room for dressing changes, so you are not travelling across the city to be seen.

A check before you fly. You are seen once more before departure, and you are given your operative report and prescriptions in person. Keep them: any doctor who sees you afterwards will need them.

Follow-up once you are back in the Gulf

Remote consultations. Regular video calls and follow-up photographs at the stages that matter during healing. The two-hour time difference means these happen at a civilised hour for both of us.

Your medical file. You travel home with the full record, your prescriptions and the surgeon's instructions for whichever doctor you see locally.

Local care. Suture removal and scar follow-up can be done by a nurse or clinic where you live, working from the surgeon's instructions. Arrange this before you travel rather than after.

A contact who answers. You have an English-speaking point of contact who remains reachable after you return. If something worries you, you ask us. If it is urgent, you see a doctor near you immediately and tell us afterwards.

Your treatment pathway, step by step

  • Preparation, from home. Questionnaire, photographs, first opinion, free quote. Check your entry requirements now.
  • Day 1, arrival. Airport pick-up, pre-operative assessment, consultation with the surgeon and the anaesthetist.
  • Days 2 to 3, the clinic. Surgery, anaesthetic monitoring, one to three nights depending on the procedure.
  • Days 4 to 6, the hotel. Nursing care, rest, and a final check before you fly.
  • Months 1 to 12, back home. Remote follow-up, video consultations, monitoring of how the scars settle.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Tunisia if I live in the Gulf?

That depends on your nationality, not on your country of residence. A residence permit for the UAE, Saudi Arabia or Qatar does not change what Tunisia requires of your passport. Check with the Tunisian embassy or consulate for your country of citizenship before booking.

How long is the flight?

Around six and a half to seven hours direct from Dubai, and around six from Doha, both daily. From other Gulf cities, check whether a direct service operates on your dates.

Can I be dealt with in English?

Yes. You have an English-speaking point of contact before, during and after your stay, and Arabic is spoken throughout.

How many days should I allow?

Most procedures need five to six days in total, including one to three nights in hospital. Aesthetic medicine treatments can be done in a day. A dental implant usually requires two separate trips, several months apart.

What happens if I have a complication after I get home?

Contact us straight away. If it is urgent, see a doctor near you first and tell us afterwards. This is exactly why you leave with your operative report in hand and why a contact remains reachable.

Is it cheaper to combine two procedures in one trip?

Usually, yes, and it also means one anaesthetic and one recovery instead of two trips. Whether it is feasible depends on the total anaesthetic time the surgeon considers acceptable, which is decided at the consultation.

Planning your stay from the Gulf

ServiHealth organises and coordinates medical stays in Tunisia. We review your file, arrange the appointments, handle the logistics and stay reachable afterwards. We do not perform the operations: those are carried out by our partner surgeons, and every medical decision is theirs, including the decision not to operate.

Send us your file and tell us which city you are travelling from. You will have a quote within 24 to 48 hours, free and without obligation. You can also see the prices, read the surgeons' backgrounds, or go straight to the quote form.
